Definitions: We won't bombard you with a lot of "MUST HAVE" type of hype; you hear enough of that from other sources. We provide objective descriptions, pictures when possible. For plants which have not yet flowered, we use the industry standard terms -- a "flowering-size" plant should bloom within one year, a "near-flowering-size" within two years -- and give you our best prediction of what we expect the flowers to look like. Flowering-season is also given when possible; plants that bloom more than once a year are described as "[Multi]."
We estimate conservatively -- I've often found buds or flowers on plants that were listed here as "near-flowering-size." As one customer put it "Your description of the plants meet what I received, when you say blooming size in a 4" basket that is what it is. I had received orders having the same description from other sites and found blooming size seemed to me in 2-3 years."
We are not currently adopting the many recent name changes on genera and species per RHS. As time permits (and if the new names last long enough), we'll add the new names parenthetically to our existing listings. We hope this transition will be less confusing for our customers.
Ordering Information: The order form on our secure server is available for VISA and Mastercard purchases. The server does NOT process your order nor charge your card; that happens only after we pack your order and are ready to ship. We also accept checks and money orders. The prices listed continue to include "handling" [boxes, packing, etc.] for orders of $75 or more, but do not include freight/postage. Orders under $75 will incur a $5 handling charge. We generally ship by Priority Mail, finding it to be the best value, but if you are in a rush and willing to pay the extra postage, we can also ship via Express Mail for next-day delivery to most areas. The postage will be charged directly to your card by the USPS. Culture sheets and gift cards are available at no extra charge, upon request. Unless special arrangements are made, we ship on Tuesdays, for Thursday or Friday delivery. Please see the "Terms and Conditions" Page for full details.
Growing Info: We've added a Basic Orchid Culture page to the site. We hope you find it helpful. Feedback would be appreciated.
Nursery Visits: SEASON HOURS FOR OCTOBER THROUGH APRIL Tues. - Sat., 10 am to 5 pm. If you are in the neighborhood, feel free to just stop in during these hours, but if you are making a special trip, it's always wise to call ahead -- we're a small shop, and emergencies do arise from time to time. For orders to be shipped, you may place your order online or by email or fax at any time; we check these daily. On the items described as "ready to move up," please let us know if you would like to save on shipping by getting them bareroot; if you don't specify, we will ship in-pot. You may also check out the Local Interest Page for "Local Only" specials and services.
Shows and other special events are listed on our Schedule of Events Page.
Collections will be filled primarily with our "too few to list" selections. We will do our best to honor requests for color and blooming season. Our Cattleyas are in plastic pots unless otherwise noted. Mericlones (also called clones or meristems) are made in the lab by using the "meristem" tissue from a parent plant to produce genetically identical copies -- sort-of like Dollie the sheep. Although mutations can occur, they are very rare in 'clones made by reputable labs which don't try to "over-produce" from a single sample. So when you buy a 'clone of a plant you've seen and liked, you can be confident that you know exactly what you are getting.
Unlike clones, hybrids are variable, to greater or lesser degrees, depending on the similarity of the parents and their genetic backgrounds. The uncertainty provides the excitement. We grow and sell only hybrids made with quality parents, in which we see potential for improvement over the parent stock. We provide descriptions of the hybrids listed below that have flowered while in our care, and our best prediction for those which have not yet flowered.
Our Dendrobiums are in plastic pots unless otherwise noted. Our vandaceous plants are grown in hanging baskets with no potting medium, or on hangers with no basket at all, unless otherwise noted.
